Champ Serena says yes to Paris

 

PARIS (AFP) - Newly-crowned Australian Open champion Serena Williams will play in the Paris Open indoor tournament from Februay 7-13, the organisers said Saturday.

The 23-year-old, who beat fellow American Lindsay Davenport 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 in Melbourne on Saturday to claim her second Australian Open title, will line-up in the tournament here along with Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo and Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova of Russia.

 

Hewitt's marriage proposal to actress after Australian Open final loss

 

MELBOURNE (AFP) - Australian Lleyton Hewitt proposed to Australian television soap opera actress Bec Cartwright straight after his defeat to Russian Marat Safin in the final of the Australian Open, the couple announced here on Monday.

The couple's agents confirmed the engagement in a statement and said Hewitt proposed to 21-year-old Cartwright, a star of Australia's Home and Away series, shortly after losing to Safin at Melbourne Park.

"Lleyton and Bec met five years ago at a Starlight Foundation charity tennis day and rekindled their relationship   late last year," the statement said.

 

'Young' gun makes history at Aussie Open

- American Donald Young became the youngest junior to win a grand slam title after defeating first seed Kim Sun-Yong of South Korea to win the Australian Open here Sunday.

The second seed dispatched the Korean 6-2, 6-4 in only 1hr 11min to claim his first grand slam victory.Aged at only 15 years 191 days he now becomes the youngest number one in the history of junior world rankings, an achievement that was still sinking in for the exuberant American in the aftermath of his landmark win.
